About This Place

Nestled in the heart of San Francisco’s Richmond District, Kowloon Tong Dessert Cafe offers a delectable journey into authentic Hong Kong-style fast food and desserts that delight both the palate and the soul. This unpretentious yet vibrant dessert restaurant blends nostalgic flavors with a modern twist, creating an inviting space where every visit feels like a comforting escape.

The cafe’s menu reads like a love letter to classic Hong Kong cuisine, boasting a variety of dishes that are as satisfying as they are comforting. The Mango Sago in Coconut Milk and Mango Go Go stand out as bright, refreshing highlights, bursting with tropical sweetness paired with a creamy, velvety texture that lingers on the tongue. For those craving savory bites, items like Curry Fish Balls and Rice Noodle Rolls deliver authentic flavors with a satisfying chew, perfectly balancing spice and savory depth.

One of the standout limited-time offerings, the BB9G Popcorn Chicken with KT house special salt, hot pepper, and sriracha mayo sauce, captures that ideal balance of crispy, spicy, and creamy that makes it utterly addictive. Fans of comfort food will also appreciate the Hot Desserts section, where traditional treats like Red & Green Bean Sweet Soup and Taro in Coconut Milk Sago provide warm, soothing bites that feel like a hug on a cold day. The Sesame & Almond Paste and various glutinous rice ball desserts showcase rich, nutty, and subtly sweet flavors that carry the heritage of Hong Kong’s vibrant dessert scene.

The atmosphere at Kowloon Tong Dessert Cafe is casual and familiar—no frills, just solid late-night comfort food that hits the spot when cravings inevitably strike. Customers praise the attentive and friendly service, with staff quick to provide extra utensils and even proactively refilling water, creating a welcoming and hassle-free dining experience. The space tends to be bustling, a testament to its popularity in the neighborhood and beyond, yet it remains a relaxed spot perfect for sharing plates with friends or grabbing a quick, satisfying meal to go.

Many diners return time and again for their favorites, from the crispy Salt & Hot Pepper Chicken Wings to the hearty Chicken & Pork Chop combos served with rice or spaghetti. Reviews also highlight the takeout experience, ideal for those seeking a hassle-free option without compromising on flavor—an important aspect for busy locals and visitors alike.

While no spot is perfect, as one guest noted the waffles can be a tad dry, this cafe’s overall offering fills a unique craving for authentic Hong Kong flavors in a fast, accessible format. And the surprises don’t end at the menu—during San Francisco’s football season, they’ve even curated special treats like the Go Niners Fresh Mango Smoothies with Strawberry Purée, injecting local spirit into their tropical creations.

At Kowloon Tong Dessert Cafe, it’s clear that the goal isn’t to dazzle with flashiness but to deliver genuine, heartfelt Hong Kong-style fast food and desserts—those joyful, nostalgic flavors that comfort and satisfy. Whether you’re coming in for a late-night snack, a casual meal with friends, or a familiar taste of home, this cafe invites you to relish every bite and every moment.

Tasty Hong Kong style desserts. Many tasty options. We got the salted egg yolk fries, mango desserts, waffles. Waffle was a bit dry but overall tasty and hit the spot

I find this place to be always busy. I always end up ordering to go when I come. They have one of the best desserts. I also love their fried popcorn spicy chicken and their pork chops with rice or spaghetti my favorite. If you're looking for a good place to eat that closes late this is your place. Definitely worth it.

Finally got a chance to try out this place. It is not the best but it didn't disappoint. We have the ice cream waffle sandwich, mango go go, popcorn chicken and curry fish ball. Food is decent. The service was attentive, brought us extra utensils and bowls ready for us to share food, Refilled our water without having to ask!

Been coming here since college. Long overdue small review. Solid no frills late comfort bites and dessert, nothing too fancy but always a nice treat of dishes to scratch an itch.

Updated 4/2/2025: Check your receipt. I realized Kowloon Tong Desserts didn't remove a tofu desert dish until I got home. They didn't have that dish available and I was charged for it. When I called the same night, the clerk refused to refund me over the phone and told me to come back. Today, I went back and a different crew was working. Luckily the clerk from the previous evening left a note. Still, what a waste of time for me to get a refund when they could have just done it electronically since I charged it on my Visa. Original review: Kowloon Tong desert cafe has been here since the 90s'? My friend lives up the block and I remember seeing people still in there when I drop him off after bar hopping. It is still the same. The place was filled tonight with people waiting for a table at 9:30pm. The food here is OK. Not the best. The thing that keeps people coming back is that they are open late if you want to have a place to chat after dinner. Good times.

Entered and sat pretty quickly. Desserts came fast and were really tasty. The mango sago was really nice. Came in the winter time and the fruit was still fresh. It wasn’t overly sweet nor was it too creamy. Also the portion size was good for an after dinner dessert. Overall a nice well balanced all around dish to have.

Great place for Canto desserts that will transport you back to the Hong Kong of the 70’s & 80’s for the yummy fish balls, fried chicken wings, sandwiches, fries, finishing with a bowl of hot sesame and almond soup with sesame or peanut glutinous rice balls. There is a special “Happy Hour” menu that is a great deal. Service is prompt and the ambience is laid back-perfect way to end a date night.
